Spotlight on Women's Health

Interview with a midwife

Though midwives delivered less than 11 percent of American babies in 2006, that percentage has been steadily increasing. In fact, in the past 10 years, it has increased 33 percent. Still, most Americans are not sure what midwives do, how they are trained, or if they are an option during pregnancy and delivery. Read our interview with Susan Hernandez, a certified nurse-midwife, to learn what midwifery is and how to know if this type of care is right for you and your family.

What Women Want to Know

Highlights from the womenshealth.gov call center

We received an e-mail from a woman who wanted to know if it was okay that she was still breastfeeding her 3-year-old while she was pregnant.

We told her that it is okay to continue breastfeeding her 3-year-old while she is pregnant. Although, because breastfeeding can cause uterine contractions, it may be advisable to wean if she is at risk for preterm labor or has had a high-risk pregnancy in the past. We recommended she consult with her doctor regarding this issue. We gave her some resources to find more information.
