My challenge was being allowed to breastfeed without interference. I found the lactation consultants to be fairly pushy and overbearing at the hospital in which I gave birth. Although I wanted to breastfeed, I knew that the constant harassment would keep me from moving ahead. Thankfully, I found a nurse who was willing to be my advocate and run interference, allowing me to attempt breastfeeding on my own, without interruption or evaluation on my technique. If you are like me - slightly modest and feeling comfortable with the information you may have studied prior to giving birth - make certain your nurses know that you need time on your own to breastfeed and that you aren't comfortable with someone peering over your shoulder. Had I not found my nurse advocate, I was at the point where I was going to give in and request to feed my child formula.
